Event Calendar
Register early as events fill quickly. Once registered, you will receive an email about one week before the event with last minute details such as where to meet, what to bring, etc.
As someone in Richmond is counting on you, please follow through on your commitment. Houses are built on time, additional children are fed, and more of the elderly have the attention they need, when you attend an event you have agreed to. Once you have registered, if you find you can not attend, contact Volunteer Opportunities asap at (804) 828-3648.

Meet the Service Organizations and make a FREE ICE CREAM SUNDAE!
If you would like to know more about VCU’s service organizations, come and talk with any of the representatives from the 12 service organizations at VCU. Drop in any time for this informal event. Make new friends, make no commitments, and make a FREE ice cream sundae.
When: Thursday, Sep. 3, 4 – 6 p.m.
Where: The Student Commons, Commonwealth Ballroom B
Into the Streets Service Plunge
About 10 teams of VCU students will each go to a different nonprofit agency to perform about one-half day of community service. Enhance your resume, use the event as team building or to fulfill community service requirements for your group, or just give back to the Richmond community.
When: Saturday, Sep. 26, from about 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Where: We will meet in the Student Commons in the Commonwealth Ballrooms, enjoy a large continental breakfast, and car pool to local nonprofit agencies.
To register:
- 1. Check your schedule and be sure you are available before registering. If you register and can not attend, you could take the space of someone who could have attended and who could help those in need.
- Read the project descriptions below, and e-mail your top 3 choices in order to Beth Ward, the Volunteer Services Coordinator at bhward@vcu.edu.
- 3. You will receive an e-mail the week before September 26 with details on the project you are assigned to, e.g. what to wear, when to meet, etc.
Check out these fun and meaningful projects:
- The American Diabetes Association needs a lot of volunteers to support the "Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes." The times are 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and plan on staying the entire time. Volunteers will be in Monroe Park, and will receive free t-shirts! There is a mandatory volunteer training on Monday, September 21 from 5:30-6:30 in the Salon 4 of the Student Commons. Volunteers are being assigned specific tasks, so the Diabetes Association will be counting on you to follow through on your commitment.
- Help to improve the James River Park. Volunteers are needed to clear brush to open up the vistas, help with trail maintenance, to paint over graffiti, and more. The times are tentatively 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- You "must love dogs" to volunteer at the farm in Ashland owned by B.A.R.K., Bandit’s Adoption and Rescue of K-9’s. BARK’s mission is to "rescue orphaned or abandoned pets and other adoptable dogs from animal shelters in the Richmond area, provide spay/neuter and vaccinations, then find loving, forever homes for them." Help is needed to clean the kennels and spend times with these dogs. The times are from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p. m.
- The Children’s Museum of Richmond (CMoR) needs a lot of hands preparing craft materials for the thousands of children coming to the Richmond Folk Festival in October. This fun project lasts from 9:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
- The Salvation Army needs an army of volunteers to prepare for the holidays as they join with TV Channel 35, Fox Richmond for the Fox Holiday Sox program. 5,000 stockings need to be prepared, so join this fun project from 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
- Patrick Henry Elementary School needs the help of its Richmond neighbors with fix-up projects like weeding, planting scrubs, and more. Be a good neighbor and help from 8 a.m. to Noon.
- ElderHomes helps to keep individuals in their home who are elderly, low income, or disabled. They do this by involving volunteers with painting projects, minor home repairs, and yard work. Join in on this project that is always popular from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Help the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond at their 3rd Annual Buddy Walk
Join VCU as we support the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond with a popular fund raiser during the Buddy Walk. We will be balloon sellers! Visitors to the Buddy Walk, can buy a helium balloon for a $10 donation, and each balloon has a number attached. The number is turned in to the balloon redemption center, and everyone is a winner. Prizes range from a $5 gift card to McDonalds or Chipotle to a weekend get away. Volunteers get lunch and a t-shirt! Space is limited so sign up early.
When:Saturday, October 10, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where:We will meet at the Commons and car pool to the Richmond International Raceway, about 15 minutes from the Monroe Park Campus.

Support the Richmond Folk Festival!
185, 000 people are coming to the Richmond Folk Festival, and they need help! We will be in the family area sponsored by The Children’s Museum of Richmond, C-MoR. We will help with art projects, the petting zoo, the pedal cars, the prize station for kids, and more. Everyone receives a t-shirt while they lasts! Register early as this fun opportunity will fill.
Note: There is a brief, 30 minute training that is optional but nice at the Children’s Museum Saturday, October 3, from 1:00-1:30pm. Attendees to the training will receive a $5 gift certificate good for any non-food merchandise at the Festival. They are also invited to the party for volunteers and performers Saturday evening, October 10 from 10:30 pm – 1am. Training attendees can also pick up their parking passes if they need one. Others can pick up parking passes at the Children’s Museum.
When: Saturday, October 10. There are 2 shifts, 11:30 am -3:30 pm OR 3:00 pm -6:30 pm
Where:We will meet at the Commons and either walk or carpool to the site.

Support the Richmond SunTrust Marathon! "The nation’s friendliest marathon" needs your help at a "junk food stop"
We will be staffing a "junk food stop" where we will set up and hand out snacks for the runners. Shifts are available from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or 10:30 to 1:00 p.m. if you would like to volunteer for all or part of the event.
When: Saturday, November 14, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: We will meet at the Commons, and walk to a nearby location.
