Match Your Schedule

Although a VCU student's schedule is extremely busy, there are volunteer opportunities ranging from one-time 10 minute commitments to ongoing obligations lasting from one semester or to include your entire college career. If you do not have the time to explore volunteer options on your own, join with other VCU students and take advantage of the following opportunities sponsored by the Volunteer Services Offices. For most, simply register online under the specific opportunity listed in the calendar of events.

Less than 10 minutes

Volunteer Opportunity Stops — "Opp. Stops"

Without leaving campus you can make a difference in less than 10 minutes. Look for the tables marked "Opp. Stops" around campus in academic buildings, the Student Commons, and in residence halls. Some of the planned activities include painting miniature pumpkins for elderly residents in nearby residential homes, writing a postcard to a vet in a military VA hospital, and helping to stitch a quilt for a child in need. All are invited to join in delivering the items and providing more in-person services to those in need in our community. Check back often under the calendar of events for upcoming projects and locations, where you can make a difference in less time than you are in a lunch line.

½ day

Saturday Special

During just one-half of a Saturday VCU students can be a balloon handler for a parade, support a marathon, and help with many more of Richmond's community-wide events.

Into the Streets Service Plunge

Be a part of a nation wide effort and give one half day of service to improve the Richmond community. Held the last Saturday in September, approximately 10 teams with 10 to 15 students each volunteer at 10 local nonprofit agencies. Some of the past projects have included working with children, providing extra hands at the local food bank, landscaping, painting, and more.

1 day

Weekend With Habitat

In April grab a hammer and sign up for either a Friday or a Saturday or both days for fun and meaningful service. Use old skills or learn new ones to help build a home for a local family in need.

Alternative Spring Break

For a different and memorable spring break, make a difference through out-of-state community service. Past trips have included helping the homeless in New York City, trail maintenance in Tennessee, building a Habitat home in Alabama, providing a happy camp experience for disabled children and adults in Michigan and helping Katrina victims in New Orleans. Apply by November prior to the spring break. For more details, visit vcuasb.org.
